Want to have Linux installed on your computer?

So you've heard of Linux and would like to give it a try, but haven't quite plucked up the courage to install it yourself yet? Or perhaps you've tried, but couldn't quite get it to work. Maybe you're just curious to see what this Linux thing is all about. If any of these descriptions sound like you, we want to see you at the PLUG Installfest.

If you do intend to come, please register for the event so we can have some idea of the numbers involved. Also keep in mind that for time reasons, we won't be able to start any new installs after 4pm. Come early and you'll probably have fresher, happier helpers assisting you!

Stuff to bring: If you want to have Linux installed on your machine, please turn up with all needed peripherals for your computer. In particular, this includes the keyboard, mouse and monitor as well as the machine itself. You will also need to bring any cables required, including power and networking cables. (We intend to have a wireless network available too, but wireless is slow, can be notoriously flaky and many common wireless networking cards are not yet supported by Linux.)

After the Installfest: Enjoy your shiny new Linux system! We are also aiming to hold an "Introduction to Linux" event some time after the Installfest. You might also want to think about subscribing to our mailing list.

Disclaimer: We can't guarantee that we'll be successful in installing Linux on your machine. If your computer already has another operating system such as Microsoft Windows installed on it, we will do our best to set your machine up to "dual boot" with both systems intact. However, we make no promises that this will work. It is possible, although unlikely, that you will lose data on your machine if things go wrong. Back up any important data first, just in case!

Want to help out with the Installfest?

The Installfest won't be possible without the assistance of helpful volunteers. Whether you have tables and chairs, hardware, or time and knowledge to assist others, any contribution you can make is very welcome!

What we need: lots and lots of helpers who know enough to install Linux on other people's machines, two or three snazzy show-off "demo" machines running Linux, extra networking gear. Plus spare keyboards, mice and monitors for those who will inevitably forget to bring them, and people with CDs and CD burners. We would also appreciate experts in particular areas of configuring Linux, particularly those who know their distribution inside out, or have experience getting more unusual hardware to go. Other ways you can help include setting up and packing away (lifting gear around and plugging/unplugging it).

Publicity: We could also really do with someone or three to help out with publicity. The Installfest wouldn't be much fun if PLUGgers were the only ones to turn up! There will be posters. Those of you with artistic talent should seriously think about helping out with the design of the posters, too. Then, one and all can help by plastering them all over Perth.

If you'd like to help, please register your interest, and/or contact the organisers (installfest@plug.org.au).
